You'll break the space-time continuum wearing this scent. Let gravity sling you into the galactic spice trade in a ship filled with treasures.
Space Pirate was born from Erica and Laura’s shared obsession with science fiction. When Laura told Erica that Dune author Frank Herbert had written the book in Port Townsend—home of the very first Olfactory House location—and that he was originally from Tacoma, Washington, Erica had a full-blown fan girl moment. That connection felt cosmic, and the two instantly knew they had to create a fragrance in honor of their love for sci-fi—and Dune in particular.
The concept took shape through long conversations and wild daydreams: what would a space pirate, drifting from planet to planet, gather in their interstellar hauls? Surely, only the finest luxury goods—spices, rare leathers, fine tobacco, aged spirits, and precious woods. They imagined each world offering something exotic: what would spices smell like on a distant desert moon? What strange minerals or aromatic resins might be harvested in zero gravity? What scent would fill the cabin of a space pirate’s ship?
The formulation began with spice; most notably bay laurel, with its sharp, metallic edge. Next came young tobacco absolute, evoking the scent of freshly cured leaves rather than the dryness of a cigarette. Leather, musk, oakwood, and cedar soon followed.
During Erica’s deep dive into pirate lore, she discovered what historical pirate ships were made from: oak, cedar, and pine. Her research uncovered tales (both adventurous and horrific) from the Golden Age of Piracy and the European spice trade wars, when ships were laden with treasures like silk, sugar, tea, and spices—ripe for the taking.
From that inspiration came a fragrance rich with spiced air, fresh-cut tobacco leaves, ambergris, and precious woods. During the process, Erica developed the Olfactory House proprietary leather accord—a bold, animalic scent crafted entirely from plant roots, seed extracts, resins, and woods. The result evokes vintage library armchairs and well-worn catcher’s mitts, without using any animal ingredients.
But something was still missing… until she remembered: grapefruit and lime. Just the thing to stave off a little space scurvy.
And so, in 2023, Space Pirate was launched, and it’s been on the best sellers list at Olfactory House ever since.
